our values

The Chioccioli lab seeks to facilitate the continued growth and development of all lab members by creating a culture where everyone can thrive. Our values form the backbone of our lab, guiding our daily interactions as well as our overall mission. At the individual level, our values are a reflection of our own lived experiences. Hence, we seek to create a space where lab members can thoughtfully and proactively engage in discussions that expand our understanding of inclusive science.

  • We value diversity of thought, experience and background in everything we do. We believe that every person has a right to be here and every voice has the right to be heard. At the interpersonal level, we value the differences between us because they enrich our lives and provide an opportunity to learn.

We expect lab members to embrace a culture of respect - for each other, for our work, for the ways in which we are similar and the ways in which we are different. We expect lab members to work hard and support each other. We expect lab members to celebrate each others’ successes and to own their mistakes freely. We expect forgiveness and understanding with each other. We expect lab members to listen to each other with patience and respect at all times.

  • As said best by Dr. Calvin Mackie, “If you do not intentionally, deliberately, and proactively include, you unintentionally exclude.” Lab members are expected to intentionally, deliberately, and proactively include all lab members at all times.

Lab members should recognize and appreciate the diversity of scientific and personal backgrounds of other lab members. Lab members are expected to have patience and understanding for different cultures and backgrounds and have an attitude of forgiveness towards misunderstandings or conflict. Everyone deserves a seat at the table. Everyone has something to contribute and something to learn.

Lab members are expected to act respectfully towards others at all times. Any behavior or language that is disrespectful or discriminatory against anyone for any reason will not be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to, discrimination on the basis of sex, color, religion, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or age. https://your.yale.edu/community/diversity-and-inclusion

  • Science is hard. Adulting is hard. The Chioccioli lab knows this and so places a high value on mental and physical well-being. We include regular check-ins during 1:1 meetings as well as other support systems. We encourage discussion of challenges, doubts, worries and concerns and strive to work through these together.

We aim to create a healthy balance between work and life outside of work. We want you to enjoy your weekends, take vacation and be with your loved ones. We know that you do your best work when your batteries are fully charged and your energy is high. We also want you to enjoy being at work! That’s why we like to mix it up a bit by heading to a cafe for journal club and other fun stuff.

  • Yale University and the Chioccioli Lab acknowledge that indigenous peoples and nations, including Mohegan, Mashantucket Pequot, Eastern Pequot, Schaghticoke, Golden Hill Paugussett, Niantic, and the Quinnipiac and other Algonquian speaking peoples, have stewarded through generations the lands and waterways of what is now the state of Connecticut. We honor and respect the enduring relationship that exists between these peoples and nations and this land.
